Stephens Croquet Club is located in the Yeronga Mallet Sports Centre. It is nestled in a quiet corner on the Ipswich Road frontage of Yeronga Memorial Park and is accessed via Frederick Street off Villa Street. It sits in pleasant surroundings and has ample parking just outside the gate.

Four well-maintained lawns accommodate up to 32 players. Stephens Croquet Club presently has a membership of around 50 players who enjoy both Association and Golf Croquet, with interest growing for Ricochet. Many club members attain high standards in tournaments and championships locally, nationally and internationally.

Stephens’ aim is to foster friendly play at all levels of ability, and welcomes prospective players from age 12. To this end a series of COME & TRY days are scheduled each year for Sundays in March/April, June, August and October (see details below). These days are specifically planned, with experienced players on hand to show intending players the basics.

Anyone interested in learning to play will also be made most welcome on any of the play days listed below.

2015:

One way and another, 2015 has been a very busy year at Stephens.

Apart from our regular play days, on most days of the week it’s not unusual to see members enjoying a game or two or practising. There has been a variety of successful tournaments held at the club. We’ve hosted a couple of CAQ tournaments, held our Association Croquet Handicap Singles Tournament and the Egyptian Golf Croquet Doubles over Easter, and the Ernie Melville Tournament in May.

Members have also entered tournaments and gala days run by other clubs in Queensland and inter-state. Stephens is particularly proud to have three members in the State Golf Croquet Team. Well done Gaye Pitman (Captain), Rosemary Newsham and Geraldine Trivett. Rosemary was also accepted to play in the Women’s World Championships in Nottingham England. Geraldine and Rosemary were both selected to play in the President’s Eights.

The club held four successful and fun-filled “Come and Try” days during the year, and we’re pleased to say several of the Come and Tryers have now become club members.

A variety of other activities have occurred during the year. Australia Day was celebrated with a Tea and Damper croquet day. From time to time club members have represented the club at various community events. On Anzac Day we worked with the Annerley Sub-Branch of the RSL to run a water station and hand out Anzac biscuits to those who attended the service at the cenotaph adjacent to the club. A large group of members enjoyed celebrating Stephens’ 92nd birthday at a local restaurant. To mark the end of winter many once again stayed on for Bread and Soup after play on the last Sunday in August.

It wasn’t all fun and games, as the violent storm that occurred on 27th November 2014 caused extensive damage to the clubhouse, shelter sheds and storage sheds. As luck (or good management) would have it, the repairs were all covered by insurance. Getting the work done was another matter and took hours of time and supervision. Now together with that and the refurbishing of all windows and doors, we’re very proud of our new-look clubhouse.

As the year draws to a close we look forward to the Annual General Meeting and Christmas Party including trophy presentations in early December.

Then comes the New Year when we will look forward to seeing many of you at Stephens for social play or to take part in a tournament. If you are not able to physically visit us, you can find us at www.stephenscroquet.com.au or ‘Find us on Facebook‘ – Stephens Croquet Club

August

Graceville CC visited Stephens for the 2014 Patrons Cup on Saturday 16 August. This inter-club competition was inaugurated in 2013 by Councillor Nicole Johnston, who is patron of both clubs. Continuous light rain did not deter the large group of Association and Golf players who happily donned assorted rainwear and enjoyed the wet weather challenges. Competition was fierce, with Stephens being the eventual winner, wresting the cup from Graceville who won it last year.
