Easter at Stephens

20 May 2019

The Easter Handicap Singles for Association Croquet event on Easter Saturday and Sunday was followed by the club’s Easter Golf Croquet Doubles (modified Egyptian Format) on Easter Monday.
For the AC Handicap Singles, it was very pleasing to have entries from eight clubs from Bundaberg to Southport. Once again, there was a full field of 16 players.

Player Handicaps ranged from 0.5 to 13 so there were lots of bisques to keep track of in some games. In fact, it was the prospect of giving away such numbers of bisques that nearly discouraged Kathie Grant from entering. Fortunately, she was swayed by fellow Southport member Barbara Northcott’s enthusiasm for the event. Kathie ended up winning the final of the main X section 26-2 against last year’s runner-up, Lindsay David (Graceville).

Competitive spirits were not dampened by the heavy rain on Saturday and 22 games over the two days were Pegged Out.  As the Winner found out, the ‘3 hour, stop on the bell’ format gives the higher ranked players time to get back into games against players with lots of bisques. Everyone enjoyed staying for drinks and nibbles at the end of the event before heading home.

Egyptian tournament

Stephens held its ever popular Egyptian tournament on Easter Monday. Sixteen pairs of players from   Eildon, Graceville, Twin Rivers, Southport, West Toowoomba, Stephens , Tamborine, Wynnum and Windsor fought out the competition and negotiated the handicap system , not the usual round robin event.

Stephens dodged all the rain that fell on many other Clubs that day and everyone had a great time.
Winners were Ralph Allan/Ces Crispigni (Stephens), runners up were Maia McGhie/ Ian Every (Twin Rivers).

Make sure you enter next year, it’s great fun.
