Qld State Gateball Teams & Doubles Championship 2020

21 August 2020

Caloundra Mallet Sports Club hosted the 2020 QLD State Gateball Championships from 15-17th August. Despite the withdrawal of two teams - one from NSW and one from Canberra- that were planning to attend, there were 9 teams playing in the Teams Championship and 12 pairs in the Doubles Championship. This was an excellent turnout of teams considering the problems caused by the COVID 19 pandemic.

The winning team was the Rocky Tops which had three members of the Rockhampton Mallet Sports Club, one from Gracemere Croquet Club and one from Ipswich Croquet Club. Presenting the Lola Whyte Trophy was Fiona McAlister who is the youngest daughter of Lola Whyte. She told everyone of how the Trophy was donated to honour Lola’s memory. The stick and ball on the Trophy were Lola’s personal possessions.

Second place went to the Macisles team which comprised members from McIlwraith and Eildon Clubs. Third place went to the Southport Red team.

What a successful weekend it was for Cheryl and Steve Kele! They were undefeated in their Block B and won the Final against the winners of Block A- Philip Rowlands and Alan Beeson. These two won the Doubles Championship last year. This twin success by Cheryl and Steve is very rare.
