Formed in 1928, Toombul Croquet Club recently celebrated its 90th Anniversary. The Club was incorporated in 1996 and was one of the first clubs to join the Croquet Queensland Association (CAQ), which was formed in 1923, providing the Association with numerous committee members (including Presidents and Secretaries), registered players, coaches, referees and volunteers.

The founders were gifted an old school-house as its Clubhouse, and its four lawns are leased from the Brisbane City Council. The Clubhouse has been renovated to an extent so as to include modern conveniences such as air-conditioning, but it still keeps its old-world look while providing shelters on each lawn, a BBQ and entertainment area and well-kept gardens.

The venue forms part of Oxenford Park, which provides a tranquil green area amongst the high-rise apartment buildings which have become part of the landscape. The Club is only a five-minute walk from the Nundah Railway Station, and is a short distance from the local Nundah shopping centre, with the larger Toombul Shopping Centre also close by.
One of its unique features is the mural that is painted on the back of the building – this fronts on to Oxenham Park and makes a bright advertisement for the sport of croquet.

The Club has 18 members at present, who play on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. There is a coach who provides tuition for members who play either or both Association Croquet and Golf Croquet.

Potential new members are invited to attend a Come Try Day when advertised, or to contact the Club direct.  They are offered three lessons in their choice of discipline at $10.00 a lesson, then they have the option to join the Club, which is known for its friendly members and its social inclusion. It invites new members to join in a welcoming atmosphere while playing a sport which can be both competitive and social.

Toombul Club is part of the Brisbane North Region for croquet and always supports activities such as the annual Friendship Day and, where possible, enters pennant teams in the disciplines it plays. The Club is proud that it is often called upon to host Croquet Queensland’s State Championships; it recently hosted the national (Australian Croquet Association) Women’s Open Championships.

Like all sports Clubs, the Club’s volunteers support a number of fund-raising activities. One which is well-known is the annual Australia Day “Aussie Breakfast”, where a full breakfast is served after the Flag Ceremony, followed by croquet games and then a paper-bag lunch.  The Club also has a robust Friday morning Mah Jong group which welcomes new members and it also applies regularly to host the local Bunnings’ Sausage Sizzle.

The club facility is a great venue when considering a private event or function. It regularly plays host to birthday parties, engagements, work functions and the ever- popular Christmas party. Often events are during the day, although it can host a breakfast party or an early evening soiree if you fancy something special. Check out the Club’s home page at www.toombulcroquet.com for more information.

So, if you are interested in expanding your social and sport activities, please do consider the Toombul Croquet Club.
