Early records of croquet played in Murwillumbah were destroyed, unfortunately, during the big floods of 1954 and 1974, so knowledge of these early days comes from recollections of past and present senior club members.
It is believed that croquet was first played in an organised form in 1921, games being played on the lawn of the private resident of Mrs "Babe" Elliott in Prince Street. However, when the Murwillumbah Bowling Club staged the Northern Rivers District Bowling Association Carnival in 1927 and women were not allowed to play, application was made for a croquet lawn to be built on land adjoining the club.
