The basicsYour questions, answered

What is croquet?

Croquet is a precision lawn sport played with mallets, balls and hoops on a flat grass court. It rewards tactics and a steady hand rather than strength or speed, which is part of why it suits players of every age. There are four codes played in Queensland: Golf Croquet, Association Croquet, Ricochet and Gateball.

Which code should I start with?

Most newcomers start with Golf Croquet. It's the simplest to pick up, the most social, and you can play a real game within your first session. From there you can try Association Croquet, Ricochet or Gateball if you'd like a different challenge.

Do I need to be fit, or any good at sport?

No. Croquet is gentle on the body, played at a walking pace on flat ground, and is one of the few competitive sports where beginners and experienced players genuinely mix. If you can walk around a lawn and swing a light mallet, you can play.

What does it cost?

Come-and-try sessions are free, and clubs lend you a mallet for your first hit. If you decide to join, annual membership varies by club — typically modest, and your nearest club can tell you exactly. Renewals are handled through Croquet Queensland's membership system.

What should I wear and bring?

Flat-soled shoes (so you don't mark the lawn), a hat, sunscreen and a water bottle. That's it — the club provides the mallets, balls and hoops. Smooth-soled sandshoes or sneakers are perfect.

How do I start?

Find your nearest club, see when they run a free come-and-try session, and nominate to come along. You'll be shown the basics and playing a game on the day. No experience, no gear and no commitment needed.
